The short answer
It depends entirely on the restaurant. Peri peri chicken is a cooking style, not a certification. The chicken being peri peri-flavored has nothing to do with whether it's halal. You have to check with each specific restaurant.
What does halal mean?
Halal (حلال) means "permissible" in Arabic. For meat to be halal:
The animal must be alive and healthy at slaughter. The slaughter must be performed by a Muslim with a sharp blade in one swift cut. The name of Allah must be invoked. All blood must be drained from the carcass.
Halal also prohibits pork, alcohol in marinades or cooking, and cross-contamination with non-halal ingredients.
Is Nando's halal?
Some Nando's locations are halal-certified, some are not — it varies by country and specific restaurant. In the UK, many Nando's are halal. In the US, none of the Nando's locations are fully halal-certified. There's also no Nando's in New York City — the closest locations are in DC and Chicago.
Is Peri Peri Grill House halal?
Yes. 100% certified halal at both locations — Brooklyn (Bed-Stuy) and Bethpage (Long Island). All chicken, beef, and lamb is halal. No exceptions. This commitment is non-negotiable and has been in place since we opened in 2018.
How to verify a restaurant's halal status
Don't just take their word for it. Ask:
Is your certification current? Certifications expire and must be renewed. Who is the certifying body? There are legitimate halal certifying organizations — ask which one. Are all proteins halal or only some? Some restaurants offer halal chicken but not beef or lamb. Ask to see the certificate if you need confidence.
